Background

As we know, assisted reproductive technology (ART) techniques that use more substantial and forceful interventions are the most prevalent nowadays, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and intrauterine insemination (IUI). More people are considering the combination of complementary medicine and ART. Examples include acupuncture and Chinese herbs before and during IVF and IUI.

The researchers at the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine found that when acupuncture took place on the day of embryo transfer, statistically significant improvements were found in the rates of clinical pregnancies, ongoing pregnancy, and live births. They also found that 10 woman would need to be treated with IVF and acupuncture to see one additional pregnancy. In another study, often referred to as the "German study," a German fertility clinic offered 160 IVF patients who had good-quality embryos an opportunity to participate in a study on acupuncture and IVF outcomes. In the acupuncture group, 34 of the 80 patients got pregnant. In the non-acupuncture group, 21 out of 80 got pregnant. A number of other, smaller sized research studies on acupuncture and fertility showed:

Acupuncture may improve sperm quality and counts in infertile men

Acupuncture may improve the lining of the endometrium, including increased the blood flow to the uterus.

Acupuncture may help regulate hormone levels, specifically gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which in turn may improve ovulation rates.

Acupuncture may help those with thyroid problems, which can lead to problems with fertility.

Acupuncture may increase the number of follicles produced during an IVF treatment.

Infertility in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believe that causes of infertility include the blockage of Qi and Blood flow, low level of Qi and Blood, the “excess” condition (accumulated toxins), the change of moods, such as anxiety and depression. TCM treatment of infertility thus focuses on restoring the harmonious balance of Qi and Blood, cleansing and detoxifying your body, increasing relaxation, lowering stress levels, soothing the pain and therefore promotes fertility naturally. This works for both women and men.

What We Can Help

Pre-conditions treatments

Pre-conditions are the causes of infertility. For women, we treat pelvic inflammatory disease (PIV), endometriosis, irregular menstrual cycles, and too much or too less volume of period etc. For men, we treat low semen quality, low sperm count and sperm mobility. In addition, acupuncture can increase relaxation, help with pain and decrease stress levels. All these greatly benefit the married couples when facing problems conceiving a child.

Treatments during your IVF/IUI cycles

For couples who are planning to receive IVF/IUI treatments, we will cooperate with RE’s schedule and make individual treatment plans accordingly to increase your chance of getting a successful pregnancy. We encourage starting acupuncture and/or herbal treatments 1-2 month(s) prior to the cycle ever starting. We will also schedule your acupuncture treatment on the afternoon before the transfer of their embryos, as well as on the afternoon or day after the transfer. Please call the office for more detailed information.
